Harmattan In Winter.

The most profound line I’ve heard this past month goes; “If I show you the end from the beginning, where lies the room for your faith? If I remove every hurdle from your path, where lies the chance for your maturity? If I continue giving you everything the second you think of it with no questions asked, where lies the room for your gratitude, and if nothing changes, no matter what wrong you do, where lies the room for your worship?”

It’s never a walk in the park, this life we’re living. The bigger your dreams, the more you’re going to have to endure and learn. If you want to play out of your league, you are going to have to train out of your league. Prayer does not excuse you from the core subjects of challenges you must pass to enter your destiny. The reason you cant and shouldn’t think of prayer as a way to dodge challenges is because embedded in those challenges and rough roads are the gems that you will need to become what you dream of.

Don’t also think that your decision to be mediocre will excuse you from the furnace that tries great men. Mediocrity and ‘inambiton’ come with greater wahala, but that wahala doesn’t build you, it crushes you. It doesn’t make you a better man, it makes you a bitter man with a self esteem lower than the fuel in a miser’s tank. Point is, whether you set out to be extraordinary in life or mediocre, it will not be a smooth journey. Lemon can only become lemonade with the right mindset. All it will be to a mediocre man is an antiperspirant, or a sour, biting, sharp juice-replacement he must endure because he can’t afford the lemonade that the rich people get.

My Secret

Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 3.16.31 PMYou know how I choose to look at things in my bleakest hours? I like to think to myself “So this is how it feels like just when dawn is about to break into morning. So this is how the tunnel looks like just before striking diamond. So this is how the caterpillar feels like the night before turning into a butterfly. So this is how a mogul feels like just before his breakthrough.” I relish the hard times because I have my eyes on the big picture. The big picture makes present challenges look like plot-twisting dramatic pages in a bestselling book. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not an easy thing to do. In fright and doubt you’ll gulp in some gallons at the thought of drowning, but there’s one way out. The Holy Spirit.

God is not a fool; He will never give you a beautiful future you don’t need him to achieve. You couldn’t go anywhere near your full potential with no help at all from heaven. Don’t sweat it, it’s just the way it is! Even Candy Crush and other hit apps have found ways for you to buy virtual life and other passes to complete the thing you’ve become so hooked on. You cant fully enjoy Temple Run without going back to the developers to buy life, or unlock new levels (Unless you’re p3p33 like me, then you’ll wait saah or play the old levels like that :-D)

So no matter how comfortable you feel you are right now, if you cant ascribe all glory to God then really you’re basking and boasting in a chicken coop when you actually belong in the mansion. Yes, you may have a million dollars but that’s still chicken change if you got it all in your own strength. You -more than the likes of me with nothing near that (yet)-  need God more, because well, your chicken coop is apparently someone’s mansion; imagine yours! No matter how humongous and outrageous your dreams and ambitions are, the creator of all mankind says in Ephesians that he’s more than able and willing to top that.

So Now What?

Screen Shot 2014-05-13 at 10.58.25 AMEmbrace the broken hearts and the disappointments, the hard times and bleak seasons, they define you. What is a warrior without a scar, or a hero without a dramatic story? Didn’t you ever watch Hercules or Sinbad? If you want to become something few people are, be ready to endure things few people can. The trick is, it’s so much easier with the Holy Spirit. You think I’m running my mouth? Well  just try it then. Structure your life to become more dependent on God, develop a more intimate relationship with him and see if the things that weigh you down now can continue to retain their power. They cant! Look, you can’t move a car without fuel, so why at all are you trying to conquer and achieve without the maker of wealth. It won’t work bro, and this isn’t me being spiritual, it’s me being downright real with you.

[sigh] I wrote this to tell you that the hardships will come, but they aren’t punishments or signs that God’s dejected you. They are tests you’ll graduate from with His help, or proof that you’ve deprived him of your attention and he wants it now. Don’t be crushed by the harmattan that dares to show up when it’s supposed to be winter according to your plans! Ride on it to become stronger and more virtuous. And one day when they are speaking of our legacies as being larger than life, they’ll know that it could only have been fronted by the God who rewards those diligently and earnestly seek Him. The One that’s not a man to lie nor the son of man that he’ll say something and be unable to do it. Don’t give up, we’re so close now…Screen Shot 2014-05-13 at 12.12.20 PM
