The Whatsapp-Passenger Connection!

passengerI’m an advertiser. I take boring things and make them seem exciting. I have another blog where I write more about that side of my life (Advertures). In searching for a beautiful ad to write about, I chanced upon this Budweiser Super Bowl one. I was smitten, so much that a lighted silhouette of me would have shown hairs standing so erect you could confuse them for acupuncture pins.

One thing that made that ad so powerful for me, was the music. And since I’m a sucker for good music, I dug deeper. It was from this guy called ‘Passenger’. Then I went on to listen to more of his music and watch a few of his shows. His talent is incredible.  In June 2012, he was a nobody, playing to crowds of 17! 17! Now, the light of his stardom makes sunlight seem like shadows. He said before a sold-out mega audience how clueless  he’d been that just a year from 17 onlookers, he’ll be in the major league.

Iwhatsapp1n may 2009, this nobody put up a tweet about how tweeter had refused him a job. Later in August he put up another one about being bounced by facebook. You see this guy was friends with this other guy who emigrated from Ukraine to the US when he was 17 years old. He lived in so much hardship that he survived on food stamps. These two met at Yahoo with their separate series of sad stories. The Ukrainan lost his mum, became an orphan with no family. A year or two later he started whatsapp. In the beginning, it was just meant to be an app that let statuses appear beside your phone contacts. Then it evolved into the SMS replacement it is now. Both guys built this.

Last week, Facebook bought whatsapp for $19BN (16 in cash and 3 in stock options). Between us two, I cant imagine how 19 billion people will look like. Let’s try sand, how much will 19 billion particles of sand be? A truck, a stadium? I dunno, but 19b of anything is humongous!

These two stories sobered me so much it seemed unfair to bottle it all up. You see, extraordinary is nothing but ordinary with something ‘extra’. The biggest lie you could believe is that a certain feat is beyond you. That she’s too good for you. That you don’t deserve him. That that lifestyle is the preserve of a few you cant be.

I’d like you to pause for just a second and look in your hands. Please, for just one second, look in your hands. I very strongly believe that the thing that could drive you to global prominence is in your hands as we speak. My Bible asks Have you seen a man who is expert in his business? he will take his place before kings. My guy, so what’s your business? What can you become an expert in? What one thing can you do and do brilliantly? Because I wrote all this English just to tell you to give that thing a shot. Give it a shot chick. Don’t get to heaven and watch the ‘What you could have achieved’ tape and say ‘Shit!’ you’ll be tossed over. Lol, but give it a shot.

If you’re like me, and you know that you often doubt your capabilities, surround yourself with people who believe in you, and see what you’re too afraid to believe because you worry you’ll fail. Get those people in your business. Give them unlimited access. When you start believing discouraging lies, they’ll jolt you right out of it. Why do you think I keep reaching out to you eh? So that when I slack and start losing vim, you send mails or write comments commanding my immediate return. So in a way I’m using you :-p lol. But use me too, and all the people who can spur you on. Use the whole world if you must, but don’t get comfortable with the good-enough you have. You’ve got to take the good enough and turn it to great. Become the story that inspires others. It’s in your hands. Look!

And if you look hard and still see nothing, if you see it but are daunted, say a prayer. Doesn’t have to be a thesis kind. Just say “Help me H.S, please help me.” That’s my pet name for the Holy Spirit.

So start doing something. Start preparing yourself for fame. Prepare for the opportunity that’s coming. Do like you live in a remote area and badly need a lift to Accra every morning. Be at that bus stop before dawn, because if you miss that lift of opportunity, you’re going to have to take the day off. Don’t take the day off. Look in your hands, and get moving. Peace out.
