She is beautiful, enchantingly beautiful. I looked into her eyes, smiling.
“Why?” She whispered “What’s the smile for?”
I sighed “You won’t understand.”
“No tell me Ben, please do.”
“I was just thinking how hard it’ll be for you to find true love.”
“What do you mean?” With a grimace
“You’re too gorgeous for your own good. Men of all looks, shapes and sizes have come and will come after you. They will use everything in their power to get you. Some will sacrifice years to win you. But it’ll be incredibly difficult to tell between the one who loves you for real, and the ones who love you for your body. Sometimes he has no idea it was your body he was after rather than your heart and only realises this after he dismounts, breathless and flaccid.
For me, there’s no better metaphoric expression of God’s love for you, than the way a man will do anything to get a girl he’s locked on. He will strategize, play the fool, woo your friends, buy pizza for everyone on your contact list, ’coincidentally’ be in your neighbourhood or office area very often, throw buffets and gifts at you. Heck he’d even go to church with you, at the risk of being delivered. Your ‘NO!’ spurs him on. You block his number, he calls with another. He smiles at your disses and endures your tantrums. He throws himself at your disposal and relishes running errands for you. He’s never in a hurry. A guy was still wooing my friend after 10 years! Even after your wedding, he has no problem being your side boo, inspired by the rampant spate of divorces. He gotchu. It’s the intent that’s difficult to tell. When a guy does all this, is it for the cookie or for the love?
God took the wooing game to a whoooollleee new level. For the entire old testament, he foretold in parables how he’d come and win you to himself. He used metaphors and prophesies to hint at how he’d go about it. He gave laws that weren’t meant to be kept, but rather to emphasise the need of him. He planned and set in motion a wooing strategy that will span lifetimes and generations. No matter how we spat on his face and drove him away, he never left actually. At times like with Moses, he threatened to start afresh, but he never did. He filled the words and writings of the authors of the Old Testament who lived eons apart with love notes to us. Cute romantic riddles and the checklist he’d tick off in his quest to win us. Show off right?!
Then in the fullness of time he came around, masquerading as a regular carpenter Joe. He started fulfilling his love notes in all the things that pertained to him from Genesis to Malachi. He did so many ketches, worked so many miracles to win us, but we weren’t sure he was our prince charming, even up until his death. He died to prove just how deep his love is. He endured death and the grave for the sake of this love. He forsook his oxygen (his union with God) for three days signifying eternity past to eternity future for the sake of this love. He gave it all up, did all that plus sooo much more than one blog post can contain for the bride to whom he’s the bridegroom. You.Your love. Why? Because you are the completion of He who completes all things. Because He thinks you’re too cute! Yes, even you with the bad breath and bleached skin.
But doesn’t it make you shudder a little? Doesn’t it make you really wonder why he’d endure all that and sacrifice all that for you? What was sooooo special, important and non-negotiable that no price was too much to pay? Was it so that you’ll grow, marry, have a kid or two, become CEO or some MP, get a few million dollars then die? Was all that so you’ll just go through some rites of passage? Why? Like why will centuries and centuries of planning and execution go into winning you over? Is it so you could live the life you’re currently living, or could there be something more? If you’re even a little curious, don’t you want to find out?
I mean we all know about being the salt and light of the earth, being the head and not the tail, brah brah brah, but for you in particular, is there something more you’re entitled to that you’re not aware of? are there privileges with your name on that you’re ignorant of? How much better and more fulfilling is your life supposed to be than what you’re living? Does his death and resurrection entitle you to some power, position or benefits you don’t know of? Don’t look at me, I don’t know. But I know who does. He said ask me of things to come, seek and you’ll find, knock and it shall be opened unto you. Eye has not seen, nor ears heard what God has in store for those who love him.
So I urge you strongly, without any delay to ask him those questions I’ve just asked and left hanging. Ask him sincerely and earnestly. See if he wont answer himself. Hint: Read Romans.
And in answering my question; He’s not in for the cookie. He’s the baker 😉
